Types of Structural Steel

Structural steel comes in many shapes and forms*. It is a type of steel that is used as a construction material. It is designed to have a good strength/weight ratio (also called specific strength) and to be cost-effective to benefit as a structural component in all building types, bridges, complex designs, etc.

But steel comes in many different variants, but mainly it is an iron alloy with carbon content, other elements are also added to the composition to give each alloy different characteristics as per the need of the application.

Types of Steel Structure

  • Portal Frame: This is the most common type of light steel structure, often used in many different building types, industrial, agricultural, or commercial. Portal frame steel structure relies on section steel, pipes, and C&Z steel to withstand the force of the entire structure. A common example is a regular warehouse hanger. 
  • Steel Grid: A structure of multiple rods connecting to each other, this type of structure provides excellent rigidity and extensive seismic resistance. The characteristics of such a steel structure make it perfect for many applications, such as exhibition halls, gymnasiums and so on. 
  • Steel Building Frame: This type of structure consists of columns and beams which form a structure that is capable to withstand vertical and horizontal pressure. This is common in multi-story steel buildings and is most commonly used in high-rise steel structures, commercial offices, and conference buildings. 
  • Steel Truss: This type of steel structure is made from multiple rods that are hinged at each end of a rod. It requires fewer materials, and as a result, is lighter. However, it is able to withstand higher forces. Such a structure is preferred in bridges, towers, oil platforms and so on.

Advantages of A Steel Structure

  1. A high strength/weight ratio makes constructing the same structure from steel require fewer materials. 
  2. Speed of erection: steel members are easily attached to the main frame, requiring less labour and time. 
  3. Adaptability: steel buildings can be expanded by adding new bays or wings, and bridges may be easily widened. 
  4. Ease of repair: Generally, steel structure is more accessible to repair than other building materials. 
  5. Ductility: steel deforms before failing when subjected to forces it is not rated for, giving an extra level of safety by default.
  6. Homogenous: steel behaviour under certain conditions can be easily determined, which enables the designer to take all possibilities and account for them to an exact degree. 

Disadvantages of A Steel Structure

  1. Fireproofing steel structures is a common practice, whenever there is a fire risk. This includes a special fire retardant coating which will add to the overall cost. 
  2. Corrosion is another factor that needs to be carefully considered, depending on the location and type of the steel structure a suitable corrosion treatment will be undertaken, further adding to the cost.
  3. Steel is generally more expensive, for smaller projects, its materials cost can be higher when compared with other building materials.
